چکیده

A graph is crossing-critical if the removal of any of its edges decreases its crossing number. This work is motivated by the following question: to what extent is crossingcriticality a property that is inherent to the structure of a graph, and to what extent can it be induced on a noncritical graph by multiplying (all or some of) its edges? It is shown that if a nonplanar graph G is obtained by adding an edge to a cubic polyhedral graph, and G is sufficiently connected, then G can be made crossing-critical by a suitable multiplication of edges.

Crossings, Colorings, and Cliques

Albertson conjectured that if graph G has chromatic number r, then the crossing number of G is at least that of the complete graph Kr. This conjecture in the case r = 5 is equivalent to the four color theorem. It was verified for r = 6 by Oporowski and Zhao. In this paper, we prove the conjecture for 7 ≤ r ≤ 12 using results of Dirac; Gallai; and Kostochka and Stiebitz that give lower bounds on...

Crossing-number critical graphs have bounded path-width

The crossing number of a graph G, denoted by cr(G), is defined as the smallest possible number of edge-crossings in a drawing of G in the plane. A graph G is crossing-critical if cr(G − e) < cr(G) for all edges e of G. We prove that crossing-critical graphs have “bounded path-width” (by a function of the crossing number), which roughly means that such graphs are made up of small pieces joined i...

On Fan-Crossing Graphs

A fan is a set of edges with a single common endpoint. A graph is fan-crossing if it admits a drawing in the plane so that each edge is crossed by edges of a fan. It is fan-planar if, in addition, the common endpoint is on the same side of the crossed edge. A graph is adjacencycrossing if it admits a drawing so that crossing edges are adjacent. Then it excludes independent crossings which are c...

Crossing Numbers and Cutwidths

The crossing number of a graph G = (V,E), denoted by cr(G), is the smallest number of edge crossings in any drawing of G in the plane. Wee assume that the drawing is good, i.e., incident edges do not cross, two edges cross at most once and at most two edges cross in a point of the plane. Leighton [13] proved that for any n-vertex graph G of bounded degree, its crossing number satisfies cr(G)+n ...

On the size of planarly connected crossing graphs

A pair of independent and crossing edges in a drawing of a graph is planarly connected if there is a crossing-free edge that connects endpoints of the crossed edges. A graph is a planarly connected crossing (PCC) graph, if it admits a drawing in which every pair of independent and crossing edges is planarly connected. We prove that a PCC graph with n vertices has O(n) edges.
